William Corbett
William Corbett is a British artist, photographer, writer and cultural historian. He studied art at Kingsway Princeton and Chelsea College of Art in London in 1982–83. His creative life has moved between painting, photography, music, film and publishing. His photography has documented musicians, actors, artists and the characters of London life, particularly the worlds of Soho and the Colony Room, alongside work produced during his long association with Morocco. Corbett produced Gerry’s Jerry Go Round (2008), documenting the legendary Gerry’s Club in Soho; Behind the Green Door (2012), about the Colony Room; and Hedonism (2023), recording the revival of the Colony Room as Colony Room Green in Heddon Street. His painting moves between abstraction and figuration. Faces, figures and landscapes emerge from broad, spontaneous gestures, exposed surfaces and sometimes only a handful of marks. Rather than completely describing the subject, the paintings leave space for the viewer to discover the image. His work continues to be shaped by travel and place. In 2026 he is working in and around the French Riviera, including Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monte Carlo and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin — a coastline with an extraordinary artistic history. Across painting, photography and documentary work runs a common thread: people, place and memory — capturing something of a moment before it disappears.
